Ouyang Ruyi
Young screenwriter and writer / Singapore
About
Ouyang Ruyi, pen name Ouyang Shisan, is a screenwriter and author who has long been engaged in novel writing and film and television writing. She currently resides in Singapore. For over a decade, she has consistently worked in realistic female-centric themes, character-driven narratives, and non-fiction writing.
Her works often focus on the fates of ordinary people, recording the changes of the times and society through details, predicaments, love, and wounds. She has served as the chief screenwriter for numerous theatrical films and web series, including but not limited to *It's Good to Have You*, *Sheng Nan Meets Zhao Di*, *Swap Couple*, *Fatal Cooperation*, and *My Second Hometown*. She has also written several novels, including *Live Well*, *Children of the Jianghu*, and *The Ancient Town of Babel*, some of which have sold film and television rights or been adapted into films.
After moving to Singapore, her writing gradually shifted to a dual perspective of "foreign and local," focusing on urban culture, immigrant experiences, and cross-cultural communication. Her submissions to *Lianhe Zaobao* have been accepted and published. She hopes to use Chinese to write about the stories of this city, the rhythm of its multi-ethnic society, and the emotions and struggles of the people living there. Writing is her way of understanding the world, and she hopes to connect more deeply with local culture through words.
In December 2025, she was invited to join the Asian Art Association Singapore (Creative Writing).
Artist Statement
Writing is not about "creating" stories, but rather a way of perceiving the world. This perception allows one to penetrate appearances, discern the gray areas beneath the surface, and capture the complexities of human nature—the intertwining of love and hate, the coexistence of the sublime and the base. The pain and chaos an author experiences while perceiving and processing this world are precisely the soil from which literature takes root, and the inexhaustible nourishment for writing.
After settling in Singapore, I have come to a deeper understanding of another meaning of art—a bridge across cultures. Languages, backgrounds, and ethnicities may differ, but the humanity within art is forever interconnected. I hope that my future creations will continue to perceive a deeper and broader world through the fusion of "foreign land" and "homeland," allowing words to become a means of connecting people, connecting lands, and connecting multiple identities.
