The Portrait Lab International Award is the flagship international award of Portrait Lab, an initiative by AAA Arts.
Building on the foundation of the World Portrait Competition, Portrait Lab International Award represents the evolution of a successful competition into a global platform celebrating portraiture, human stories and cultural memory.
The award celebrates excellence in portrait drawing and painting while encouraging artists to explore identity, memory and human experience through portraiture.
Open to artists of all ages, nationalities and cultural backgrounds, it welcomes both emerging and established practitioners working across traditional and contemporary approaches.

Portrait Story

Every submitted portrait must be accompanied by a written Portrait Story.
The story should introduce the person portrayed and explain why this individual was chosen.
It may include memories, conversations, observations, historical context or personal reflections.
Length: 300–600 words (or equivalent in other languages).

Submission Rules

Eligible Works:
Original work only.
Created within the last three years.
Portraits must depict real human subjects.
AI-generated artworks are not accepted.
Collaborative works are not accepted.
Previously awarded works are not eligible.
