At a time when skyscrapers are multiplying and visual spectacles are becoming increasingly interchangeable, the encounter between a human body and a building, between uncertainty and public narrative, generated a global impact more penetrating than a New Year’s Eve fireworks display. It revealed a harsh but profound reality: the vitality of an urban landmark no longer depends on how high it rises, but on whether it can be told anew.

Landmarks were once monuments to a city’s ambition. For more than two decades, Taipei 101 built its symbolic authority on height, views and location. But as Dubai, Saudi Arabia and emerging cities across Southeast Asia have risen, the scarcity of height has rapidly diminished.

For Generation Z, raised in the age of short-form video, the familiar experience of simply going up to a viewing platform and looking out over the city is increasingly difficult to turn into wonder. Even the celebrated Taipei 101 New Year’s Eve fireworks have fallen into a cycle of diminishing meaning, after years of precise, highly industrialised repetition. This is more than sensory fatigue. It is a sign that architecture itself is gradually being pushed to the margins of the public imagination. When lights and fireworks become little more than palliative treatments, a landmark that relies solely on visual stimulation to maintain its relevance will eventually be consumed by the ephemerality of the attention economy.

Honnold’s ascent was, at its core, a quiet rebellion against habitual storytelling. Although the climb was tacitly sanctioned by the authorities, it retained something increasingly rare: a degree of irreducibility and unpredictability. Taipei 101 provided security measures, including a blessing ceremony and road closures, while Netflix broadcast the event globally. Yet the physical contest between a human body, risk, sweat and real time was fundamentally different from a carefully manufactured image campaign. The fact that the footage dominated Netflix and social media platforms demonstrated what audiences increasingly want: something real, rather than another carefully packaged illusion.

The appeal of the ascent lay precisely in its imperfections and lack of complete control. The authorities’ restraint, combined with the operator’s remarkably low-cost approach to leveraging the moment — Taipei 101 chairwoman Debby Hsu said the building itself spent nothing — helped turn the event into an unusually pure communications phenomenon. For a brief moment, Taipei 101 escaped the narrow logic of commercial real estate and returned to the global conversation about great architecture. For a landmark that has been operating for more than two decades, this reimagining of space through the human body represents an exceptionally rare opportunity for brand renewal.

What Alex Honnold has shown the world’s urban landmarks is this: aesthetic fatigue is not the end of the story, but the point at which a more compelling narrative must begin.

Established landmarks everywhere face the same challenge: their narratives become fixed while their formats are endlessly replicated. Simply turning up the brightness of the lights or expanding the scale of the fireworks is no longer enough to overcome aesthetic fatigue. Real vitality comes from reclaiming the power to tell the story.

The Taipei 101 case demonstrates that through unexpected events, embodied participation and memorable public moments, urban space can move beyond being a cold physical backdrop and become a living cultural medium once again.

In an age when height and spectacle are no longer scarce, the defining competitive advantage of a landmark has shifted toward its power to tell a story.

Fireworks fade quickly. The story of a climber can be fixed in time.

Taipei 101 offers a clear model for urban landmarks struggling with the problem of becoming ordinary: when spectacle loses its value, only authentic stories and experiences shaped by uncertainty can bring a city’s symbols back to life on the world stage.

*Originally published in Chinese by Lianhe Zaobao (Singapore) on 7 February 2026.*

——————

About the Author: Jay Chau

Jay Chau is the Chairman of the Asian Art Association Singapore, a cultural programme initiator at AAA Arts, and a member of the British Art Network (BAN).
